The Proof is in the Fruit
How can you know if you are walking according to the flesh or according to
13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to
be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[c] you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness,…. and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions
and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
Identify the fruit in your life, whether it is from the flesh or from the spirit that
expresses your walk with Christ. Once you have identified these things,
deeds, behaviors, actions, thoughts……, mentally acknowledge those that are of the flesh and ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit. Awareness is significant to the ability to detach from anything that is not fruit. When I am aware of something, I am also experiencing personal conviction if it is in question.
We must learn to have enough self-awareness to know when we are living according to the flesh and to assume responsibility for our own attitudes and actions.
Daily, we struggle with living in a world that advertises, entices, and influences the fulfillment of a selfly desire. Pray daily, in the moment and redirect yourself from all these distractions and indulgences. Living with Christ actually feels so much better than living without. Just sayin.’ His way is completely fulfilling! The world does not promise, but it does tease and most often these selfish acts are pleasing momentarily, maybe even a few hours, possibly days………. God’s love is a promise, everlasting!
Get into God’s word this day and reflect on your walk with our father. Let’s call today trash day. I want to clean out my brain, my heart and my flesh from anything that prevents me from walking in the Spirit. What am I looking for in terms of trash? Usually the things that are your most dominant thoughts are a good place to start. Pray that God help you to remove these things of the flesh from your life. How will you know if you are walking with the Spirit of Christ? The proof is in the fruit!
APPLICATION: I like lists. Make 2 lists, and work hard at it. One list can be: Spiritual and the other list can be Flesh.
Under the list of Spiritual, write in the things that signify: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. This is a time to reflect and look at the areas of your life. Do these match up with love, joy, peace, patience……Take it a step further and get into God’s word and explicate what it means to display self-control or patience. Do the same for the list entitled Flesh. Really examine yourself in terms of selfly desires.
Today is trash day, but keep in mind that we need to prepare the trash bins and dump things out daily. Don’t be hard on yourself if some of the same things end up in your trash can tomorrow. Throw them out daily. Living with and walking with Christ is a daily and ongoing process of growth.
In our home, we have what is called “Sunday Cleaning.” This is the day we see bags of garbage making it down the stairs (our girls habitat) and out of my office, my bedroom, and our sons room. Weekly, we get out a good chunk of the weekly unwanted’s. Junk mail gets tossed, empty cereal boxes get thrown, the fridge gets cleaned out, and the pantry…..you get the idea. What if we took that same concept of removing the things from our life that do not line up with who we are designed to be. We are a member of God’s family. Join me today and let’s get rid of some trash together. Get those lists going.
If you are unsure about anything in your lists and where it should go: Ask yourself: Does this honor and bring Glory to my Father God?
